ASUU CONGRESS: UNIJOS lecturers voted for continuation of strike

Lecturers at the University of Jos have voted for continuation of the on-going strike by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) in the country.
Chairman of the chapter, Dr. David Jankam who made this known on Monday while speaking with THE NATION shortly after the congress of the chapter said members did not see any substance in the dialogue with the federal government to warrant calling off the strike.
According to Dr Jankam, “We have just rounded off our meeting, as a matter of fact our members voted overwhelmingly for the continuation of the state strike.
“I can also confirm to you that five of the eight universities that made up the Bauchi Zone of ASUU has also voted for continuation of the strike, and the general saying is that the federal government has not shown any commitment so far.
“We started the meeting by briefing our members on issues resolved with the federal government in their last meeting with the president of ASUU.

“But in responding to the briefing, our members observed that the main issues that led to the strike were not discussed as part of the meeting in Aso Rock.
“As such my members said president Jonathan is taking them for a ride by trying to divert attention from the core subjects of the strike”
According to Dr. Jankam, “I will now convey the resolve of our branch to our national president in our NEC meeting scheduled for this week. If the majority of the chapter voted for call off, it will ne called off, but if majority of chapters voted for continuation, so be it” said Dr. Jankam.

Beyonce Gives a Touching Performance With Blind Teenage Fan [VIDEO & PHOTOS]

While Miley Cyrus and Rihanna are busy posting nude selfies on Twitter and twerking on stage, there is one singer who is truly changing the lives of her fans around her by humbleness and kindness. We are talking about Knowles, who gave an emotional duet with one of her blind fans at one of her concerts in Perth, Australia.
In Australia last Friday, Queen Bey sauntered over to the edge of the stage, where she got down to chat for a moment with 13-year-old Sophie, who suffers from hearing and muscle difficulties in addition to being blind.

special young lady here,” Beyoncé told the crowd. “Tell everybody your name, beautiful!”

“Sophie!” she squealed with delight as the audience burst into cheers for her.
The superstar continued, “Sophie, I think I need you to help me sing this song. Do you think you sing ‘to the left, to the left’?”

Sophie did, right into Beyoncé’s own microphone, which is probably going to go in her memory bank as one of the coolest things to ever happen to her. Beyoncé seemed to be touched by Sophie’s excitement, and she touched her face before getting back up to sing the song.

Sophie’s big sister Ellie (who clearly deserves some sort of awesome sister award) arranged the whole thing months ago. She made a video about Sophie, and got it to Beyoncé through the children’s charity Hope for Change.
“She’s never really been able to go to a concert due to logistical reasons so I made a video about Sophie,” she said. “I think someone as amazing as Sophie deserves to meet someone as amazing as you [Beyoncé].”
After the concert, Ellie said that Sophie was completely shocked and delighted by the experience. “She had no idea that she was going to sing with her. It was amazing.”
She added:
“Beyoncé is her favorite … When Single Ladies came on, she jumped up and was dancing and everyone was watching her dance. She’s still on cloud nine today … It was so important for me because there’s been a lot of things in life that Sophie hasn’t been able to do, but she loves music, loves to dance and loves to sing and this was just something for me to show the world how amazing she is.”

I’m Still A Virgin, I didn’t make any s*x tape – Chidinma

the petite Nigerian music star was released and went viral on social media. Apparently the Chidinma look-alike was shown to have been having vigorous s*x with an unknown young man, but the person who released the tape is still at large and unknown. In a statement Chidinma denies the s*x tape vehemently and told reporters that she is still a virgin. In her own words, “I didn’t make any s*x tape o, I have no idea where that tape is from and I am still a virgin o!” However she didn’t stop there, she also said she will sue the person who uploaded the video and the people who made the video for slander. ...

EXPOSED: Omotola paid $650,000 to earn a slot on Times 100 influential list??

Hmmmmn..I found this allegation unbelievable but decided to share. According to blogger, Sheifunmi, our very own Omosexy bought her way into the 2013 Times most influential list with a whooping $650,000 which is over a 100 million naira. If you recall, Sheifunmi had big twitter rows with Davido and Wizkid when he published stories that Davido's dad was dating a young Uni lag girl and claimed Wizkid is disrespectful to his mum...

I just feel if Omotola has 100million naira, would she use it in gaining a slot on the times list? Seriously....

Before you decide, read Sheifunmi's allegation below

"Before we get into it and stans or celebrities with mild relevance start coming at me with a bullet-less gun thinking they have a shot, let’s get one thing out of the way; This is a gossip type website. Any information contained on this site is reported as rumor and not actual facts unless receipts(proofs) are shown, official news/confirmation from a celeb’s rep/camp or i am talking about my own experiences. Do not take offense to any material on this site because everyone has the right to their side of the story. I am willing to hear all sides. Anyone in this industry, including myself will be subject to being put on blast. What you see is what you get! This is all for your own entertainment purposes… Now moving on.

An insider who happens to work closely with the most loved actress squealed details about Omotola making 2013 TIME Magazine 100 (Most Influential People in the World) list, stating that the actress paid a whooping sum of 650,000 dollars (which is over a 100 million naira if converted) to get a slot on that list.

Now i don’t know how true this is but i won’t find it amusing if she paid to make the list. Rich people (especially Nigerians) tend to pay for a lot of things (like Grammy,MTV,Bet award tickets which comes in different packages but the one they mostly go for is the full package with the hotel covered, access to Clive David’s pre-grammys party, red carpet, a seat next to a celebrity and after party, Forbes list, etc) to get recognised or live that ‘party with celebrities’ lifestyle."

Manchester United v Arsenal: I rejected chance to bring Mesut Ozil to Old Trafford in summer, says David Moyes

David Moyes reveals he decided not to bid for Mesut Ozil, and instead chose to put his faith in Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney

Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed that he was invited to join the bidding for Mesut Ozil during the summer, but declined.

Interest from United was reported at the time, although it now transpires Moyes was not that bothered, instead choosing to put his faith in Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney

Manchester United v Arsenal: Midfield maestros will be central to Arsène Wenger’s chances of success

Arsenal's lavish collection of midfielders could present David Moyes with some serious problems at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon

A Manchester United fan, clearly miffed that Arsenal are receiving such good press of late compared to the question marks surrounding his own club, asked me the other day how many Arsenal players would get in the United team.

He maintained that the goalkeeper, defence and attack would all emanate from Old Trafford in a composite X1.

Asuu to hold congress Monday;takes decision next saturday

The various chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, are scheduled to hold their congresses on Monday to decide whether or not to suspend the over four month indefinite strike.
This disclosure was made by the chairman of the University of Calabar, UNICAL, branch of ASUU, Dr. James Okpiliya. Okpiliya, who spoke exclusively with Saturday Mirror, further disclosed that the report of the chapter congresses will be submitted to an enlarged National Executive Committee, NEC, of the union.
According to the Senior Lecturer at the Department of English and Literary Studies, “Nigerians should understand that ASUU is structured in a way that the national president has no power to call off or suspend strike.
“In fact, even NEC cannot on its own suspend strike, and that is why all the universities will hold chapter congresses to decide whether to suspend the strike or not. “When we are done on Monday, we will simultaneously submit our individual reports to NEC on Wednesday,” Okpiliya said.
He noted that the strike will be called-off if the number of branches for is more than those against. Asked to be categorical on when a decision will likely be made, he said “may be Saturday”.
It will be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had held a marathon meeting with the leadership of ASUU on Monday, where he was said to have offered the union N220 billion as part of its “enhanced allowances.”
Consequently, ASUU president, Dr. Nasir Fagge, who led his members to the over ten hours’ meeting, said he was taking “a message” from President Jonathan to NEC. ASUU declared an indefinite strike on July 1, to compel the federal government to implement the 2009 agreement both parties were said to have signed.

Why actresses prefer married men – Bose Arowosegbe

Bose Arowosegbe, a native of Arigidi Akoko, Ondo State, has come to pitch her tent with the very best in Nollywood. Having started acting in 2003 she shot into limelight in 2008 with her sterling lead role in ‘Kareni Barin’ and affirmed her arrival on the scene as a ‘made star’ in ‘Anikisaya’, a flick that earned her the alias with which she is known in the industry today, and thereafter went ahead to record string of successes with her own productions.
In this chat with Weekend Groove, the Business Studies graduate of LASPOTECH talks of her sojourn in the movie industry; her beliefs and a lot of other issues. Excerpts:.
How did you find your way into the movie industry?
I didn’t start out as an actress, I started out as a video vixen in 2002 before I was introduced into acting at the insistence of an editor named Jide Bambo. He was involved in movie production and music video production. It was as a result of his influence I veered into acting.
What was your first film and how was it like?
It wasn’t much of anything because it was a two-scene cameo. The film was “Akamo’’ and I played the role of an angel. But after that I think I caught attention of some people and it started the flow of other jobs coming my way.
Which film would you say launched you into limelight?
My break or what I can call my break came about in 2008 with my own production. The name of the film is “Kareni Barin”. It is a story of betrayal, loyalty and trust. The film teaches that it is sometimes necessary to keep friends in spite of their treachery and disloyalty. But before that I had also played a lead role in “Eni Mi”.
What are the challenges of making it in the Yoruba sector of the movie industry?
The biggest challenge is patience, having to wait for your own time. Then there is the issue of seniority when some people older than you in the industry expect you to accord them some docile kind of respect, like, not addressing them on a first name basis. These people expect you to call them “aunties” even when you are older than them in real age.
What of sexual harassment, isn’t there sexual harassment in the Yoruba as it is rampant in the English-speaking sector?
There is this saying that how you make your bed is how you sleep on it. If you present yourself as a harlot then you would meet your kind. There’s no denying the fact that there are sexual scandals, I don’t call it harassment because no one would go out of their way to harass anybody but if the woman makes herself available, then that’s her problem. It all depends on how a lady presents herself and what she seeks to achieve. If you have your focus your focus would always be your focus.
I heard you are now married, when did you marry?
I married May 26, 2013. I have known my husband a long time before we got married. I met him 13 years ago, before I even started acting. I was working then at Tafawa Balewa Square.
How has marriage affected your career?
Even though marriage hasn’t prevented me from acting, it has definitely prevented me from taking up certain roles in my films. Even when I shot my 4th production “Akoda Oro” my husband was on set with me. I just delivered my baby then.
As a married woman, can you take up sensual or sex scenes?
Like I said before marriage has limited what role I can play again in films. I cannot take part in a sex scene, real or unreal, either in my production or other productions. And nothing can make me go totally nude but I can wear seductive dresses because when I am with my husband I still wear them. I can never go nude or play sex scene but I can be seductive. Before I was married, I wear seductive dresses anywhere but now I only wear them when I am with my husband.
What did your husband say must stop about your acting?
Doing sensual roles of course. Maybe I could do them before but now it is out of the question. Then my style of dressing outside unless we are together.
Is it true that lesbianism also exists in the Yoruba industry?
Yes, you can say that again. I have heard about it and I have seen one with my own very eyes
How so?
It happened when two friends came to visit, then three of us had to share a bed. As we were on the bed with my back turned to the other two, I felt some movements and I turned, alas, the two other girls were at it, doing it. I was simply aghast and dumbfounded. I watched them transfixed for about two minutes and then gave one of them a slap. She looked at me and asked if she had touched me or what. I was so mad that I started shouting at them.
The other one was just laying down while the one I slapped was working on her. she said she didn’t know and thought I was also part of it but I shouted ‘God forbid’. She then started crying and I told her to desist from associating with the other girl again.
Are you a jealous person?
Yes, when it comes to my husband, I am very jealous.
What if you catch him in bed with another woman?
That is the end of the relationship.
But as a jealous woman you would be on set kissing another man, isn’t that unfair?
See, that is why I have to cut off taking up some roles when I got married.
Why are many actresses getting married to married men?
I am married to a married man too. I have not told anyone this before. Other journalists I have met were fed the story that my husband is abroad when he has always been in the country.
Most single men out there are not matured enough to handle the fact that actresses are normal women. They believe we are harlots to be used and dumped. I believe they are too immature to handle the life around us. They are easily affected by things they read and hear about us, and also things they see on screen about us.
But married men are matured to handle all this. They listen to us instead of listening to gist about us. They seem to understand women better. Besides, they are more caring, gentler and wiser.
You just said you are a jealous woman, how then can you share your man with another woman?
Because I knew he was married before I decided to marry him. It was my decision and I knew what I was walking into. Before I made up my mind I knew the price I was to pay and how I have to adapt to that. I have decided to share with the woman inside not any one outside.
Look at the case of Funke Akindele, why is it that actresses don’t seem to last long in a marriage?
See, it depends on the man you are dealing with. If he is the type that understands you, he won’t be looking out for rumours about you. As a lady, you must let your man understand the kind of person you are. So, when he hears things about you he understands you without your having to explain anything. Again, when you are married you must steer clear of some things you used to do.
Like in the case of Funke Akindele, I don’t think the problem came from Funke. I don’t know much of the story but I heard Funke’s husband had impregnated another lady. Even if he had, there is a way he could have gone about it instead of going public to rubbish her name because she’s a star. I hate that man for that. Funke is my friend.
You have been saying your friends, your friends – who are your friends?
I have many friends in the industry. There is Biodun Okeowo, Tayo Odueke, Sikiratu Sindodo, Funke Etti and many others.
Which of your films have been most successful?
“Kareni Barin” of course. The film won me many accolades both here and abroad. People called me as far as Europe to tell me how much they enjoyed the film and I also made good money from it. Then there is “Anikisaya” which gave me my screen name. Though, I didn’t make money from it but it helped my career a lot. It was my only film not marketed by Toymaxx. My 3rd film “Ina Orule” came out some six weeks ago and it still selling in the market. The 4th one, “Akodo Oro” also marketed by Toymaxx is expected to hit the market before December of this year.

Electricity: Govt ends bids for NIPP plants today By The Citizen

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) has announced that it would close the bids for its10 National Integrated Power Project plants (NIPP) in Abuja today.

The Managing Director of the company, Mr. James Olotu, stated this on the sidelines of the inauguration of the 1/15 Mega Volte Ambient transformers in seven locations in Lagos on Thursday.

He said that the bids would be closed on Friday while their evaluation would begin on Monday.

This, he said, would lead to the ascertaining of the preferred and reserved bidders for the 10 power plants.

Olotu said, 'We will close the bids from transaction on Friday, while we will commence evaluation on Monday. We will set up an evaluation committee comprising technicians, engineers, lawyers, EFCC and the SSS, while the Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission will supervise the process.

'Other parties involved in the evaluation will include the World Bank and the international community, and the parties will only take two weeks before reporting back to the board of the NERC.'

He, however, gave an assurance that the NDPHC management would in January 2014 announce those who won the bids, while the handing over of the NIPP stations to the successful bidders would take place in July 2014.

The Federal Government had in August shortlisted 386 firms for the bidding process.

The NDPHC and the National Council on Privatisation had said 82 submissions by the shortlisted firms were picked by the Joint Evaluation Committee from about 110 received at the close of bidding.

The breakdown of the shortlisted firms, according to the NCP, shows that 46 consortia were for the Bariam Power Plant; 44 for Benin; 42 for Omotosho; 41 for Egbema; 41 for Omoku and 39 for Geregu.

Fresh from a UK tour, Tizzle is on the path of serenading his fans with groovy tunes. He emerged into the music scene with his mainstream hit ‘Sholee’ which became his claim to fame and has become a pop anthem in the Nigerian music landscape
Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has never in history been known to have capitulated to blackmail. Act of forcing or threatening to reveal shameful or incriminating facts about the Union in the past have never bent the will of the lecturers’ Union to abandon its cause to better the lot of brain boxes. Neither will unfair bullying diminish their resolve to ensure that the universities in Nigeria are rehabilitated and sanitized. The renewed zeal by the Jonathan administration to use assortment of subtle antics to compel ASUU to call off the strike, is nothing, but blackmail. The government, simply, can be likened to a man who uses butter knife in a machine gun fight.
Aside hell being let loose by NANS and myriads of other stakeholders, including but not limited to market women, mechanics, farmers, politicians, etc., the lecturers, are being counseled, not to give in because doing so will further exacerbate the already comatose state of the nation’s educational sector, especially the universities.
Indeed, notwithstanding speculated progress purported to have been made in resolving the protracted disagreement between the Union and Federal Government as revealed by Professor Bolaji Aluko, Vice-Chancellor, University of Otueke, ASUU should not believe government and call off the strike on account of this overture or upon the wave of sponsored rent-a-crowd uprising across the country, whose intent only is to blackmail the lecturers to suspend the strike. Ample evidence exists of how dishonorable government and its officials are when it comes to honoring agreements and keeping to its promises. Ask the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA executives.
Despite repeated warnings and plea from ASUU for the government to do something before commencement of the strike onJuly 2, 2013, it  ignored the lecturers, and instead 24 hours after a meeting was deadlocked between both parties, the first lady, Patience Jonathan, and her Office, which Professor Wole Soyinka, aptly described as, ‘domestic appendage of the Presidency’, embarked on scandalous jamboree in Abuja wherein she congregated thousands of Nigerian women and wasted billions of naira that would have assisted in funding, and infrastructure upgrade in the universities. The program, which lasted for days, was tagged Nigerian Women for Peace and Empowerment Rally.
Nigerians, literally, have been going on their knees to plead with the lecturers to suspend the three months plus strike since then. Most of them waxed conciliatory at the initial stage but this week it took rather provocative slant, with many of them expressing a willingness to go to WAR with them for the long-drawn-out shutdown. The sudden umbrage against the lecturers is being explained away as a direct response for intransigence of the eggheads not to shift grounds in their negotiation with the Federal Government. And they, I mean some Nigerians are not only content at calling the lecturers all manner of names but have backed their anger with action.
Not unexpected, a colony of angry women took to Abuja streets to register their disenchantment with the lecturers. To them, the academics had gone too far and should be forced to call off the strike. But hardly had they made the protest round to the sealed  gate of the National Assembly, whose members had been on recess, than many of them were spotted to be card- carrying and front line members of the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP.  Was politics indeed, involved in this, this time around?  Methinks that President Good luck Ebele Jonathan owes an explanation for this.
With the strike consuming, so to speak, of Professor Ruqayyatu Rufa’I, former Minister of Education (she was sacked by the president) and the incumbent supervisor, Nyesome Wike, a swashbuckling fellow intent to prove a point and hold tenuously onto the portfolio(Don’t forget that his elevation from a junior position appeared more as a booty reward for routing Governor Chibuike Ameachi than for any other reason), foot soldiers of the government were quick to   point accusing fingers on ASUU leadership, in addition to reproaching them for being used by politicians. President Good luck Ebele Jonathan only used his Presidential Media Chat to restate the obvious – that the strike was politically motivated.
Undeniably, the women pro-government end-the-strike-protest was a dress rehearsal to a floodgate of other pro-government remonstrations that came in quick successions from different camps, with the most being a disheartening perfidy that came from an amorphous group which tagged itself Association of Young Academics – not sure what this really means! The Judas shadow was manifestly written all over their faces when they held their press conference. The butchers might have concluded their plans now to hit the protest road by now!
Is it not glaring that we needed no soothsayers’ clairvoyant inquest to prove that the upswing in the renewed effort to compel the lecturers to suspend the strike, is, also politically motivated. Is the Abuja rent-a-crowd protest not sufficient evidence to prove this? We are all aware, that this kind of antics, which had been the norm than an exception in our clime in the past, is now being elevated to another Machiavellian coil. Badamosi Banbagida, an ex-president who invented it and late General Sani Abacha, the goggle wearing ex-president that popularized it, I am sure will be smiling now!
I am not bordered with the groundswell of emotion displayed by the rent-a-crowd protesters crowing over the places especially in Abuja over the strike. Why would a responsible government not honour an agreement reached with ASUU in 2009? The Bolshevik nature and gunboat diplomacy method of the government in engaging with the academics is being swept under the carpet by most Nigerians. Why would we not use this opportunity to fix our universities once and for all? Why undermine a genuine effort to rejig our ivory towers. Why is   blackmail now being used to coerce ASUU to suspend the strike? Even the students are being paid to join the protest fray as well -National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, the umbrella body of Nigerian Student under the leadership of Yinka Gbadebo  appeared to have sold out. Have we imagined the effect of this on teacher-students relationship post ASUU strike?  Will Nigerians forget so soon the habitual and unreliable nature of government officials that do not keep to promises, and who are quick to repudiate any one as soon as it is signed off on? How are we sure that government will not renege again,  and again as they wont to do in the past, once the academics  heed to reason to call off the strike?
If Jonathan’s’ government is unwilling to concede to ASUU’s demand, will he also act in same manner in the instance that the working conditions of his ministers, members of the National Assembly and his other team members, that is their salaries, allowances, infrastructure, enabling environment and other motivations are impacted negatively as the nations’ universities and ASUU members are currently undergoing. Let’s face the fact and stop acting emotional. Any effort directed at fixing the nation’s universities, and which require high sacrifice on our part should be borne by all with dignified joy so as to ensure secured future for our youths, and for our socio-economic, political, scientific, technological development(s).
Insisting that ASUU members are greedy is beside the issue as the government camp would want to make us believe, for this would neither resolve the issues on the table or remedy the already distressed educational sector.  Are we not ashamed that the total amount budgeted for 700 ex-militants in Nigeria for training and upkeep abroad far exceed the annual funding expense for 20 Nigerian universities?
How do we explain the ‘‘glorified primary schools “status of our universities, and dearth of infrastructure, to the extent that over 90% of them are without internet services, outdated libraries, and with Students sitting on bare floor or peeping through windows to attend lectures. ASUU has its problems too.  However, I make bold to admit, that theirs are minuscule when compared with the wroth visited on our universities on account of corruption and neglect by successive governments. President Good luck Ebele Jonathan has not fared better.
Let this not be another public policy management disaster that could not be creatively identified, managed and delivered crisis-free to Nigerians by the government.
ASUU should not call off the strike on account of blackmail from government or from the rent-a-crowd troop but on the conviction that the point has been made that time is running out on the nation’s universities, which if unattended to would lead to total collapse of the universities,  and for the love of the teaching profession. Blackmail is only a misstep in engaging with ASUU to call off the strike.
